1. Who we are
Error123 (error123.com) is a reference site that explains common software error messages and how to fix them. It is operated by Error123, based in Melbourne, Australia (“we”, “us”).
This policy explains what information we collect when you visit the site, why we collect it, and the choices you have. It took effect on 2 October 2026.
Error123 has no user accounts, takes no payments and does not ask you to register. Most visitors browse without giving us any information directly.
2. Information we collect
We collect a small amount of technical information automatically, plus anything you choose to send us.
| Information | When it is collected | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Server log data: IP address, browser and device type, pages requested, referring page, date and time | Automatically, on every visit | To deliver pages, diagnose faults and block abuse |
| Search terms | When you use the site search box | To return results and learn which errors people look up |
| Cookies and similar identifiers | See section 4 | To run the site and, where used, measure traffic and show ads |
| Usage statistics: pages viewed, time on page, approximate location (country or city), device type | Automatically, on every visit | To understand which articles are useful and improve them |
| Name, email address and message content | When you email us | To reply to you |
| Comment details: name, email, website, comment text, IP address, browser user agent | When you post a comment | To publish your comment and detect spam |
Search terms appear in the page address and in our server logs. Please do not paste passwords, record IDs, customer data or full stack traces containing personal information into the search box.
We do not knowingly collect sensitive information such as health, financial or government identity details.
3. How we use information
We use the information above only to run and improve Error123. Specifically, we use it to:
- deliver pages and search results
- keep the site secure and prevent spam, scraping and abuse
- understand which articles are read and which errors to cover next
- reply to messages you send us
- meet legal obligations
We do not build profiles of individual visitors, and we do not sell personal information.
Where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, our legal bases are our legitimate interests in operating a secure, useful site, and your consent for any non-essential cookies.
4. Cookies and similar technologies
Cookies are small files stored by your browser. Error123 uses them in the following ways.
| Type | What it does | Can you turn it off? |
|---|---|---|
| Strictly necessary | Security, load balancing and remembering your cookie choice | No. The site needs these to work |
| Analytics | Counts visits and shows which pages are read | Yes, through the cookie banner or your browser settings |
| Advertising | Lets ad partners show and measure ads, including ads based on your visits to this and other sites | Yes, through the cookie banner or the opt-out links in section 5 |
| Comments | Remembers your name and email for next time, if you tick that box. Lasts one year | Yes. Leave the box unticked |
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings at any time. The site will still work, though your cookie preferences will not be remembered.
5. Third-party services
Error123 runs on WordPress and relies on a small number of outside providers. Each handles data under its own privacy policy.
- Hosting: [spaceship] stores the site and its server logs.
- Analytics: Google Analytics collects usage statistics through cookies. You can opt out with the Google Analytics opt-out add-on.
- Advertising: Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your earlier visits to this and other websites. You can turn off personalised ads at Google Ads Settings or opt out of many vendors at aboutads.info/choices. Google explains how it uses data from partner sites here.
- Embedded content: Some articles may include code samples, videos or other content hosted elsewhere. That content behaves as if you had visited the other site directly, and may set its own cookies.
Error123 is independent. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Salesforce or any other vendor whose errors we document.
6. Sharing and disclosure
We share personal information only in the limited cases below. We do not sell it or rent it to anyone.
- Service providers: the companies listed in section 5, to the extent they need it to provide their service.
- Legal reasons: where the law, a court or a regulator requires it, or to protect our rights or the safety of others.
- Change of ownership: if Error123 is sold or merged, visitor information may pass to the new operator, who must honour this policy.
Our providers may store or process information outside your country. By using the site you understand your information may be handled there. We take reasonable steps to make sure it stays protected.
7. Retention and security
We keep information only as long as we need it for the purposes in section 3.
| Information | Kept for |
|---|---|
| Server logs | 90 days |
| Analytics data | 14 months |
| Emails you send us | Until the matter is resolved, then up to [12 months] |
| Comments | Until you ask us to remove them |
The site is served over HTTPS, and access to the WordPress admin and server is restricted to the people who run the site. No website is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a data breach is likely to cause serious harm, we will notify affected people and the relevant regulator as the law requires.
8. Your rights
You can ask us what personal information we hold about you, and ask us to correct or delete it. Email us using the details in section 10. We will reply within 30 days and may need to confirm your identity first.
Depending on where you live, you may have further rights.
- Australia: Where the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) applies, you may access and correct your information under the Australian Privacy Principles. If you are unhappy with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.
- EU, EEA and UK: You may request access, correction, erasure, restriction or a portable copy of your data, and object to processing based on legitimate interests. You may withdraw cookie consent at any time, and complain to your local data protection authority.
- California: You may ask to know, correct or delete the personal information we hold, and we will not discriminate against you for doing so. We do not sell personal information. [If advertising is used] Advertising cookies may count as “sharing” for cross-context behavioural advertising; you can opt out through the cookie banner or the links in section 5.
Because we hold very little that identifies an individual visitor, we may be unable to locate data tied to you unless you have emailed us or commented.
9. Children, external links and changes
Children. Error123 is written for software professionals and is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has sent us information, contact us and we will delete it.
External links. Articles may link to vendor documentation and other sites. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites, so please read their policies.
Changes to this policy. We may update this policy as the site changes. The current version will always be on this page with its effective date. Significant changes will be flagged on the home page.
